Description:
Day trip to Plovdiv and Bachkovo Monastery, Bulgaria
Meet your guide, car and driver at your hotel in Sofia and drive a hundred miles south to Bulgaria’s second city, Plovdic, a charming old town, older than Rome, Athens or Constantinople, and where you can still see the layers of its history. Peel back these layers at the excavations of one of the first cities in Europe from the 12th century BC, the Roman Amphitheatre, the mosques of the medieval Ottomans, the imposing civil buildings and triumphant churches of the reunified and independent Bulgaria, and the Communist statues of the 20th century. Explore the picturesque district of ‘Old Plovdic’, a sort of quaint architectural museum with a riot of balconies, gardens, cobbled lanes, ornate facades and fountains, and visit the Ethnographic Museum in one of these lovely houses. After lunch visit Bachkovo Monastery, founded in 1083. The second largest Bulgarian monastery lies in the valley of the Chepelare river, surrounded by the foothills hills of the Rhodopi mountain. Its church still keeps one of the oldest gilt wood-carved iconostasis in the country. The miraculous icon of Virgin Mary is among the greatest treasures of the monastery – it dates as far back as 1311. Enjoy the unique frescoes of the dining room and the facade of St. Nicholas Church, walk through the picturesque garden with the rare species like ginger, persimmon, magnolia, Chinese pine and laurel, while your guide explains to you about the history, architecture and nowadays life at the monastery. Return to your hotel in Sofia.
