Admire Beijing’s futuristic architecture on this special Beijing sightseeing tour. Pick up from your Beijing hotel and drive to Tiananmen Square to marvel at the exterior of the National Theatre. This enormous glass and titanium egg-shaped dome seemingly floats on a huge pond of water and its modernity makes a striking contrast to both the conventional Stalinist-style of the Great Hall of the People and the historic Forbidden City nearby. Continue to the Olympic sites. The centrepiece of Beijing’s Olympics is the National Stadium, more commonly called the Bird’s Nest, albeit one 330 metres long by 220 metres wide. Seating 100,000 spectators during the field and track events, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies, the stadium’s bold design of a seeming tangle of girders, will be remembered long after the games. Also admire the award-winning Water Cube, a futuristic, glowing cube of what looks like giant bubbles, which is the Aquatics venue. The tour ends with a visit to Factory 798 in the outskirts of the city, an old factory transformed by local artists into a vast exhibition hall of modern art – some bizarre, some though-provoking, some breathtaking.
