Meet your guide, car and driver at your hotel in Sofia and drive some 70 miles south-east of the capital to Koprivshtitsa, a picturesque and popular town famous for symbolising Bulgaria as a newly-independent nation in the 19th century after centuries of occupation by the Ottomans. There are nearly 400 historic houses in the town, many well-preserved, Its buildings are traditionally colourful and exotic, and you will visit several of these homes – those of a poet, a merchant and a revolutionary hero – that have been turned into museums displaying the costumes, jewellery, furniture, weapons and other artefacts from olden days. Also admire the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, according to local legend it was constructed in just 11 days after the original was burnt down by the Turks in 1817. The church is low, dug deep into the ground, dimly lit, painted to look like a regular house on the outside so as to attract as little attention as possible. What is remarkable about it is the iconostasis. It resembles a delicate wooden cobweb in which Biblical motifs and beautiful plants and animals are entwined. Return to your hotel in Sofia.
