    Overview:

Half-day private sightseeing tour of traditional Chinese architecture and rural life in the New Territories, visiting an old walled village and ancestral hall, a fine mansion, the famous Man Mo Temple and Tai Po Market.

    Description:

Explore the history and culture of old Hong Kong on a private tour

Pick up from your Hong Kong hotel and drive to the elegant Tai Fu Tai Mansion, built in the 19th century for a local bigwig, and richly embellished with ceramic tiles, paintings and carved woodwork. This charming house is the only remaining Mandarin’s house in the region and has recently been renovated with funds from the Hong Kong Jockey Club. Continue to a fine example of an ancestral hall, where the forebears of one of Hong Kong’s famous families have been honoured for centuries. Nearby is a quaint walled village, Lo Wai, which was built in the days when bands of marauding pirates could slaughter whole families in the remote inlets and bays of present-day Hong Kong. Even wild tigers used to roam the region, and so extended families or clans protected themselves by building villages surrounded by thick walls, sometimes complete with a moat or cannon towers. Afterwards, you may like to visit the local ‘wishing tree’. Simply write a wish on a piece of red paper and throw it up into the tree and if it catches in the branches, your wish will come true! Next visit the 19th century Man Mo Temple, dedicated jointly to the Taoist god of literature, Man, and the god of war, Mo. Inside, the temple is richly decorated and fragrant smoke swirls above from the giant coils of incense sticks that hang from the ceiling. Round off your day with a visit to Tai Po Market for some great local goods and souvenirs! NOTE: This tour is not available on Tuesdays, Thursdays or Sundays.
