The famous symbol of the city is Elephant Trunk Hill, said to be a tired baggage elephant who was turned to stone as he drank from the river. Admire the cave and river at this viewpoint, and continue to the extraordinary Reed Flute Cave. This enchanting walk inside a limestone karst mountain is like a walk through a fairyland where caverns and underground lakes are prettily illuminated, and spotlights pick out bizarre mineral deposits, stalagmites and stalagtites that resemble mythical beasts. Continue to Yaoshan Mountain and walk along a path with temples and statues up Guilin’s highest hill for panoramic views of the city and its surroundings, a tableau of paddy fields dotted with dramatic karst hills and watered by many rivers. The mountain itself boasts beautiful azaleas in the spring, bamboo groves in the summer, red maple leaves in the autumn and pristine snow in the winter! You may prefer to take the cable car up the hill and walk down again (cable car ticket not included).
