Meet your guide, car and driver at your hotel in Sofia and head 70 miles south of the capital into the heart of the National Park of the rugged Rila Mountains. Here, behind great stone walls like those of a fortress, stands Rila Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the largest Bulgarian Orthodox Church in the country and one which symbolises the nation’s cultural and spiritual identity. Admire its richly decorative stonework, frescoes, archways and arcaded balconies, and visit the monastery’s most famous treasures, the 14th century tower, a beautiful gold-plated iconostasis, and a wooden cross intricately carved by a single monk for over 12 years until he went blind from the work. You can spend your time touring the monastery complex in depth – its several churches and chapels, its ethncgraphic exhibitions, kitchen, library and monks’ cells – or if it is a fine day you may choose to also explore the surrounding countryside on a gentle trek. At the end of an inspiring day, return to your hotel in Sofia.
