| Meet your local English-speaking guide, car and driver at your hotel or cruise ship tender in Pula, and head north along the coast to Rovinj, also known as 'the Blue Pearl of the Adriatic'. Admire this ancient and very picturesque medieval town, its town walls, gates, archway and a clock tower all overlooked by the beautiful Church of St Euphemia which has wonderful views from the tower, a replica of St Mark’s in Venice, of the rooftops and distinctive chimneys and island-studded coast. The narrow streets and hidden squares are lined with grand, crumbling architecture of many styles when the town was an important part of the Venetian Republic, and there are chic boutiques, galleries, tempting cafes and many churches to explore. Drive to Fazana on the coast to catch the ferry to the largest of the Brijuni Islands, Veliki Brijuni. This is one of the 12 islands that make up the National Park just a couple of miles offshore, and on its 690 hectares there is a 2nd century Roman villa, a zoo with elephants, llamas, zebras and camels who are the descendants of gifts presented by 90 heads of state to Tito who had a holiday home here, a medieval church, and a little tourist train which takes you easily around the island's sights. Spend an enjoyable few hours here before returning to Pula. |
