duration: 5 hours

overview: Full day private day trip of Porec including its magnificent Basilica, the mysterious Baredine Cave, lunch and wine tasting

details: Meet your local guide at your hotel or cruise ship tender in Porec and embark on a walking tour of the town, seeing old Roman roads such as the Decumanus, the Cardo Maximus and the Marafor square which was the old Forum, with temples. After the Romans left the town became part of the Byzantine Empire and the most splendid building in Porec was constructed during this era, the 6th century Euphrasius Basilica, whose floor and wall mosaics have earned it UNESCO World Heritage status. In medieval times the town became part of the mighty Republic of Venice for 500 years, and town walls, gates, churches and palaces were built, many of which are still standing today. After lunch in a typical local restaurant, drive a few miles away to Baredine Cave, filled with strangely-shaped stalagmites and stalagtites and an underground lake where the bizarre 'human fish' lives. The walk through the cave takes around 40 minutes on a guided tour, along a man-made pathway and down a long flight of steps. On the drive back to Porec, call at a vineyard to sample some of the local wines, before returning to your hotel in Porec.
