| Pick up from your hotel in the Ohrid area by private car and guide, and drive to the so-called 'town of poetry', Struga, on the shores of both Lake Ohrid and the Black Drin River. In some of the surrounding mountains are natural caves used as churches - in the middle ages this region was the centre of the Orthodox Church and boasted over a thousand churches and monasteries - there are still over 200 around Lake Ohrid! Visit two of them close to Struga, the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin and the Monastery at Kalista, and the Church of the Archangel Michael near Radozda, both filled with beautiful frescoes. Enoy a hearty lunch in a traditional restaurant, sampling some of the region's specialities - perhaps eel, trout or carp for which Lake Ohrid is famous, then enjoy a stroll through the old town, admiring its busy bazaar, pavement cafes, and traditional architecture. Perhaps shop for locally-produced carpets and embroidery, brandy and cheese before returning by private car to your hotel.
