Cu Chi Tunnels and Cao Dai Temple - Saigon - Vietnam

times available:
all day
duration: 7 hours approx

overview: Full day private day trip from Saigon to the tunnels used by the Viet Kong during the Vietnam War, and to one of the country's most exotic temples

details: Pick up from your Saigon hotel by private car and local guide and drive 40 miles northwest of the city to explore the secret underground hideouts used during the Vietnam War. They were constructed by the North Vietnamese Communists who had infiltrated the American-held anti-Communist South Vietnam by travelling along the perilous Ho Chi Minh Trail from the north with supplies of food and weapons. The tunnels can be less than 3ft wide and 3ft high in places, but people could live here for weeks on end, as all necessary basic facilities were here - hospitals, toilets, dormitories and kitchens - on several levels, and all underground. Please note the tunnels can be claustrophobic, sweaty, and a bit grimy. After exploring the tunnels and re-emerging into the fresh air, drive to Tay Ninh. Here is Cao Dai Holy See Temple, home to a religion that embraces Buddhism, Christianity, Islam and Taoism and worships all of these gods plus Martin Luther King, Victor Hugo and Louis Pasteur. Believers are pacifists and vegetarians for 10 days in every month, and pray 4 times a day to bring about the perfection of man through reincarnation. The interior of the temple is flamboyant, with pink pillars, green dragons, silver dragons, divine eyes and painted clouds. Return to your hotel in Saigon after a day of fascinating contrasts!

inclusions: Private excursion by car with local guide from Saigon, lunch, entrance to the Cu Chi Tunnels and Cao Dai Temple
