| Pick up from your Hanoi hotel by private car and local guide and drive about 35 miles west of the city through the Red River Delta to the historic village of Duong Lam, well-known for its quaint houses made from laterite rock - meet a local family in their home. Take a bicycle ride from the village through the countryside, passing rice fields and farmers, and pausing at Phung Hung Temple, dedicated to one of Vietnam's ancient heroes, and at the atmospheric Mia Pagoda to admire its 287 Buddhist statues. Back at Duong Lam learn how to make spring rolls and have lunch in the home of the Huyen family. Then head back to Hanoi by car, with a stop along the way at either Tay Phuong Pagoda or Thay Pagoda. Tay Phuong, 'the Pagoda of the West', dates from the 8th century and there are 239 steps up to it - at the top there are wonderful views of the mountain, fields and villages below. Thay Pagoda, 'Heavenly Blessing', is 11th century, and has a Taoist temple in the midde of a pond where the spirits of the earth, water and sky are worshipped, and two arched roofed bridges dedicated to the sun and the moon. After a visit to one of these temples, arrive back at your hotel in Hanoi.
Please note that safety equipment is not provided for your cycle ride, and it is undertaken entirely at your own risk.
