| Full day excursion by private car and with local guide from Hanoi to two famous handicrafts villages, and to one of Vietnam's artistic masterpieces, the statue of Buddha at But Thap Pagoda |

| Pick up from your Hanoi hotel by private car and local guide and drive around 6 miles northeast of the city to Bat Trang Village. This 500 year-old village is famous for producing the best pottery in Vietnam, often decorated with typical Vietnamese symbols such as dragons, tigers and phoenixes, flowers and landscapes. See the village temple first then walk down the narrow roads to a typical house-cum-workshop where you will meet one of the potters, and learn how to throw a pot on a wheel before visiting the market to see more of the ceramics made in the village. Return to Hanoi for lunch, then drive about 13 miles to But Thap Pagoda. Sitting on a lotus supported by dragons is the statue of the Goddess of Mercy, she of the thousand hands and a thousand eyes, 350 years old and one of Vietnam's artistic masterpieces. Finally head to the village of Dong Ho, famous for its folk paintings. These feature typical Vietnamese scenes and figures created by local materials - the paper is tree bark, the coloured paints are from leaves and earth and sea shells, the glaze from rice paste. Such pictures have been created here for at least 500 years, and they are still popular, especially during the lunar new year. Each colour of each design has its own woodblock, and these are used in turn to build up the rustic pictures which are traditional depictions of rural life, either of folk tales, or harvests, celebrations or of symbols such as fish (prosperity), or livestock, and so on.
Return to Hanoi after a fascinating day!
