The palace was so large and so well-built that it eventually became a town in its own right, Split, with the emperor's own mausoleum becoming the cathedral. See the Roman Temples of Venus and Jupiter, the Peristil which was the grand courtyard entrance to the palace, and the vaulted cellars which were once the dungeons.
Split itself is the twin town of Dover in Kent, both being strategically important military towns since ancient times.
