| Pick up from your Xian hotel, and drive to the first class Shaanxi Provincial Museum, a vast modern building with 16 acres of exhibition space that was opened in 1991. With over 120,000 objects from every era of Chinese civilisation from prehistoric times to the end of the emperors in 1911, the museum's displays from the thousand years when Xian was China's capital and the eastern terminus of the Silk Road include neolithic ceramics painted with scenes of everyday life, bronze swords and statues, gold and silver artwork and ancient wall murals.
From here proceed to the imposing medieval city walls, 40ft high and up to 60ft thick, with a moat, ramparts, battlements and fortified gates. See the enormous Bell Tower that has rung out the correct time since it was built in the 1390s and which symbolises the old city. The tour concludes at the 11th century Confucian Temple which houses the Forest of Stone Steles Museum, the biggest such museum in China with over 3000. Steles are tall stone tablets inscribed with poetry, maxims, text commemorative of heros, emperors or great events in ornate calligraphy, and were very popular in the olden days.
