| Pick up from your Xian hotel and walk along part of the imposing medieval city walls, 40ft high and up to 60ft thick, with a moat, ramparts, battlements and fortified gates. See the enormous Bell Tower that has rung out the correct time since it was built in the 1390s and which symbolises the old city, and see the Drum Tower. Admire the Great Mosque, one of the largest in China that incorporates both Arabic and Chinese features in its design, and explore the narrow alleyways of the surrounding muslim quarter. Visit the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, 210ft high, and you might like to climb the stairs to throw some coins down for good luck!
