| Pick up from your Shanghai hotel, and drive to the quaint waterside town of Suzhou around 90 minutes' away from Shanghai, where you have the day to admire its pretty bridges, pagodas and a fine garden.
Explore the Humble Administrator's Garden, Suzhou's largest and one of China's most famous classic gardens, with lakes, pavilions, terraces and halls as well as carefully landscaped trees and viewpoints. Continue to Tiger Hill, according to legend the burial site of the city's royal founder that was guarded by a white tiger. At the top of the hill is the Cloud Rock Pagoda that tilts over a little further each year, and the Sword Pond, said to be the hiding place of 3000 swords. See the 1500-year-old Hanshan Temple, also known as Cold Mountain, and admire a lovely arched bridge from which you can see all the barges along the Grand Canal. Before returning to Shanghai, visit the Silk Embroidery Research Institute where highly skilled women create exquisite embroidery on the town's most prized export.
