| Pick up from your Shanghai hotel and drive to the quaint waterside town of Tongli around 1 hour from the city. Built on 7 islands between 15 rivers and 5 lakes, the town is very evocative of old China with its well-preserved, decorative Ming-era houses, willow-lined waterfront and dozens of pretty bridges that criss-cross the waterways. Visit the tiny Tuisi Garden and take tea in a traditional teahouse before cruising to Zhouzhuang where you visit a wealthy merchant's family home, Shen Mansion, a perfect example of Qing-era domestic architecture. Return to Shanghai by road, en-route calling at a silk mill where you can learn about the silk making process and bargain for rugs, quilts and clothes.
