| Pick up from your Shanghai hotel and drive to the Shanghai Observatory which now forms the Asstronomy Museum. Located around 22 miles from Shanghai on top of She Shan Hill, and built in the early 20th century by a French missionary to house his three-ton, 40-centimetre double-refracting telescope. This telescope is almost unique in that it saw Halley's Comet in both 1910 and 1986.
Other exhibits include replicas of ancient water clocks where time was measured by the flow of water, as well as a Prin meridional instrument of 1925,the first Chinese-made atomic clock, and quartz and global-positioning-system clocks. There are pictures of the first Chinese astronomers and a 17th century calendar, the first photos taken in China of solar eclipses, nebulas, dark stars and comets.
China's second largest optical telescope and other highly advanced equipment in daily use is housed in laboratories on a neighbouring building that is not open to the public.
