| private evening excursion to Shanghai's favourite evening haunts - Xintiandi, Cultural Celebrities Street and Leisure Street |
| |
| Pick up from your Shanghai hotel and drive to fashionable Xintiandi, an atmospheric district of old stone shikumen houses and alleyways that have been restored and which now house trendy boutiques and bars. Continue to Duolon Road, also known as Cultural Celebrities Street. Once this unassuming road was home to a group of men who changed China for ever. Here, a group of radical writers and intellectuals lived or would meet here to exchange ideas and discuss social theories, they questioned the political status quo, wrote revolutionary literature that had great popular appeal and encouraged the growth of the communist movement amongst the citizens of Shanghai. It was here in China's most energetic, forward-looking and international city, that the first National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party took place in 1921, attended by Mao Zedong.
This charming road in the former American Concession area has been preserved as an atmospheric reminder of Old Shanghai. Its old houses are now home to antique shops, art galleries and curio stalls, and the literary heroes of the revolution are honoured in bronze statues along the road. Also visit Leisure Street, Wujiang Road. Packed with cafes and restaurants and stalls selling delicious and inexpensive traditional snacks such as fried dumplings, particularly at the eastern end where the road is narrower.
