| Pick up from your Shanghai hotel and drive to Jade Buddha Temple, famous for its two jade Buddha statues, carried by monks on their backs all the way from Burma in the 1870s. This renowned and very popular temple was saved during the Cultural Revolution by its quick-thinking head monk, who covered the walls and doorway with posters of Chairman Mao which the Red Guards were then unable to touch! Continue to Longhua Pagoda. This octagonal, seven-storey pagoda is 130ft high and is Shanghai's own Leaning Tower of Pisa as it tilts very slightly to one side! The next door temple dates from the Qing dynasty, so between the mid 17th and early 20th centuries, with a Drum Tower and a Bell Tower, and a garden of peach trees. Next visit red-brick Xujihui Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of St Ignatius. This church was built by the Jesuits in 1906 in a neo-gothic-cum-traditional Chinese style, and has a 160ft high bell tower. It is the largest catholic church in Shanghai and Sunday services attract over 2,000 worshippers. Visit Xiaotaoyuan Mosque, built in 1925 in an eclectic mix of architectural styles from traditional Islam, to Western and typical Chinese, it is also distinctive for its four green domes. It is not the oldest mosque in Shanghai, but it is the largest and most popular, and has a particular function as the gathering point for Muslims from all over China who want to make the pilgrimage to Mecca by sea, departing of course from the port of Shanghai. Finally visit Jing'an Temple, also known as the 'Bubbling Well Temple' and the Temple of Tranquillity, it is Shanghai's favourite temple for traditional ancestor worship, and many people also offer coins to bring themselves further riches. During the Cultural Revolution it was turned into a plastics factory, and is undergoing restoration.
