| Pick up from your Shanghai hotel and drive to Dongtai Road, a street bazaar filled with stalls selling Mao-era memorabilia, trinkets and (usually fake) antiques (note that antiques may not be exported from China anyway). Good items are posters, watches, china, records, photographs and copies of the Little Red Book. and so on. The best time to visit is later in the afternoon when the sellers might lower their prices before they call it a day.
NOTE on antiques shopping: It is safest to assume that many of the 'antiques' that you see are not quite the genuine article - but if you like something and you can bargain the price down to an acceptable level, then why not buy it anyway! Never offer more than a third of the asking price at the start, and work your way up to a mutually acceptable point in between if you are interested in buying. Bear in mind that antiques dating from before 1795 cannot be exported, and those dating from between 1796 and 1949 should bear a small red seal and a Relics Export certificate from the Beijing Culture Relics Bureau (BCRB), to allow them to be taken out of China. The seal also proves the genuineness of the items. Keep your receipts.
